The Kings Speech

Watch this.

This is honestly everything I was going to say about this film in a nutshell. It's a formula workhorse film that does its job. It never aspires to be anything more than a formula film. I don't care if this was word-for-word how it happened in real life. If you don't make an effort to make a special film, you don't deserve the Best Picture award. While we're at it, if your only purpose is to get an Oscar for Harvey Weinstein then you sure as hell don't deserve the Best Picture award.
Once again, I'm going to agree with Bob on this one. It's a three star film. It's only flaw is that it never tries to be a four star film. It has its moments, mostly when Bertie is talking to his brother, but it's just pandering to much for me.

If this wins best picture I'll....be very sad.

3/4 Solid but unremarkable

The One That Got Away

Everyone has this. A movie that went into your local theater that you thought you might want to see. And then you don't. Then comes the end of the year and you realize that was the movie that you HAD to see this year. And you missed it. Well, this year for me that movie was The Social Network. Cue Trailer -

The List.

I'm not an expert on film. I haven't been around long enough to know exactly which movies I should see, and I've missed a lot of great movies that came out before I was born. So, for a list of movies that really defines "awesome" I turn to another. Bob Chipman, aka MovieBob is an independent filmmaker and film reviewer for an online magazine called The Escapist. In August he wrote an article (two actually) listing the movies that every movie nerd should see. Unsurprisingly, I haven't seen most of them. However, I think that they can provide a nice baseline for any movie reviews from me that are to come. The following is just the list. To read the full article(s), and you really should,go to escapistmagazine.com and search for movie nerd bible, because I'm having a lot of trouble adding a link to this post.
