I saw a lot of movies this year. However, most of them were old movies. I hardly saw any movies in theaters, and honestly, that's pretty normal. My theater only has two screens, and doesn't usually get movies until well after they debut in big cities. I first saw four of the five movies on this list on dvd, only one was seen in a theater. Unfortunately I haven't seen most of the big Oscar contender dramas this year, so they aren't on the list. But anyway, here we go:
#5 - Kick-Ass
This was funny as hell, and loads of fun. When I saw this in March (or was it April?) I probably would have said it was going to be my favorite movie this year. Boy was I wrong.
#4 - Would it be lame if I just said funny as hell and loads of fun again? Because that's the perfect description. The difference is you just say awesome way more in this movie. Let me sum it up for you. Machete pulls out a dudes intestines and uses them as a rope to jump out a window. Pure awesome.
#3 - Inception. Truly a masterpiece of story-telling, Nolan creates the world and rules of the dream and then uses them to crack open our main character like a egg, showing all his imperfections and flaws, telling his story. My only complaint (and it's not really a complaint) is that there is so much more that could be done with this idea. I highly doubt there will be a sequel, but that's not really what I want. I want a greater exploration of the dreams. We get close to what I'm looking for in the beginning of the movie (folded city) but I just feel that this idea could be used to do so much more. Still, an excellent movie.
#2 - Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. See it. See it now. I can not express how much I love this movie. It may not be for everyone but it's one of my all time favorite movies. Love it, love it, love it!
ps - I'm way to cool to say "I'm in lesbians with this movie"
#1 - Toy Story 3
There is no doubt in my mind that this is the best movie I saw this year. Toy Story 3 is a movie that is supposedly 'for kids' while being an allegory for death and what comes after. It explores christian ideas of heaven and hell, as well as alternative concepts of the void, and reincarnation. It's also about growing up and moving on, and somehow that's so much sadder than dying. Anyone who's seen the last scene of this movie knows what I'm talking about. It still has lots of the old pixar humour and fun for kids, but it's also truly exceptional tale about how you never stop growing up. Until you die (sorry, couldn't help myself).
